In a metropolis where residents embody the elements of fire, water, land, and air, an impassioned young woman and an easygoing man discover a fundamental connection: the commonality they share.
"Elemental," alternatively titled "Forces of Nature" in certain regions, is a captivating 2023 American computer-animated romantic comedy-drama film co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Helmed by director Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream, the script was crafted by Sohn, John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, with Pete Docter serving as executive producer. Marking Pixar's 27th feature film, the movie boasts a star-studded cast including Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Catherine O'Hara. Set in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic representations of nature, the narrative revolves around Ember Lumen (voiced by Lewis), a fire element, and Wade Ripple (voiced by Athie), a water element, who cross paths and fall in love following a plumbing incident at a convenience store owned by Ember's father, Bernie (voiced by Del Carmen).
Conceived after Sohn's prior film, "The Good Dinosaur" (2015), the idea for "Elemental" was pitched to Pixar, exploring the intriguing concept of whether fire and water could form a connection. Drawing inspiration from Sohn's multicultural upbringing in 1970s New York City, the film celebrates the city's rich cultural tapestry. Influenced by romantic classics such as "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967), "Moonstruck" (1987), and "Amélie" (2001), the story weaves elements of romance into the diverse urban landscape. For research, the production team delved into extensive point-of-view city tours on platforms like YouTube, exploring locales like Venice and Amsterdam for inspiration. Utilizing advanced animation tools, the visual effects and appearances of characters, particularly Ember and Wade, were meticulously designed. The production of "Elemental" spanned seven years, encompassing work both in the studio and remotely from the filmmakers' homes. The musical score, composed and conducted by Thomas Newman, included an original song performed by American singer-songwriter Lauv.
With a whopping budget of $200 million, "Elemental" stands as one of the most expensive animated films ever produced. The film pays homage to individuals who contributed to its creation, including Ralph Eggleston, Thomas Gonzales, Amber Martorelli, and J. Garrett Sheldrew, who all passed away in 2022.
"Elemental" made its debut at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 27, 2023, as the closing film, receiving a remarkable five-minute standing ovation. Subsequently released in the United States on June 16 in various formats like RealD 3D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema, the film initially opened below expectations but gradually gained momentum, ultimately being hailed as a sleeper hit. Its global box office success culminated in a remarkable gross of $490.9 million, solidifying its status as one of the standout animated films of the year.
