Synopsis:

"Sanju," released on June 29, 2018, is a compelling Indian Hindi-language biographical film directed and edited by Rajkumar Hirani. The narrative delves into the tumultuous life of renowned Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, addressing aspects such as his struggles with parental legacy, personal challenges, and vices.

  

Ranbir Kapoor takes on the lead role, portraying the complexities of Sanjay Dutt's life, including his battles with drug addiction, entanglement in the 1993 Bombay bombings, intricate relationship with his father, resurgence in the film industry, eventual exoneration from the charges related to the bombings, and his release post-serving a jail term. The film boasts an ensemble supporting cast that contributes to the portrayal of pivotal events in Dutt's life.

  

The idea to create "Sanju" originated from conversations between Rajkumar Hirani and Sanjay Dutt, where the actor shared intriguing anecdotes from his life. The film's title, "Sanju," is derived from the affectionate nickname used by Dutt's mother, Nargis. Principal photography commenced in January 2017 and concluded in January 2018. The film's soundtrack, featuring compositions by Rohan-Rohan and Vikram Montrose, includes a guest composition by A. R. Rahman. Fox Star Studios acquired the film's distribution rights.

Reception and Achievements: 

"Sanju" garnered widespread acclaim for Rajkumar Hirani's adept direction, engaging screenplay, captivating cinematography, and stellar performances, particularly from Kapoor, Kaushal, Rawal, and Koirala. While some critics raised concerns about potential image-cleansing of the protagonist, the film's overall positive reception propelled it to significant milestones.

Upon its release, "Sanju" achieved the highest opening for any film in India in 2018. It set a record for the highest single-day collection for a Hindi film on its third day. With a global gross exceeding ₹5.87 billion (US$85.83 million), "Sanju" emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2018, the fifth highest-earning Hindi film in India to that date, and the 12th highest-grossing Indian film. The film received seven nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards, securing wins in key categories, including Best Actor for Ranbir Kapoor and Best Supporting Actor for Vicky Kaushal.
